HVAC filters are marketed with claims about air quality, allergy relief, and virus protection. Some of those claims are accurate. Others are overblown. Here's what filters actually do, what the ratings mean, and how to choose the right one.

What an HVAC Filter Does

An HVAC filter has two jobs: 1. Protect the HVAC system: Keep dust, debris, and particles from coating the blower, coils, and internal components. 2. Improve indoor air quality: Remove particles from the air that circulates through your home.

Most filters do job #1 adequately. Whether they do job #2 meaningfully depends on the filter's MERV rating.

Understanding MERV Ratings

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rates how effectively a filter captures particles. Scale runs 1-20; higher is better.

MERV 1-4: Basic fiberglass. Catches large particles (lint, large dust). Protects the HVAC system but minimal air quality benefit. Filters you should stop buying.

MERV 5-7: Catches mold spores, dust mite debris, pet dander. Entry-level pleated filters fall here. Better than fiberglass, decent value.

MERV 8-11: Catches most allergens, fine dust, smaller mold spores. This is the sweet spot for most households. Good air quality benefit without restricting airflow.

MERV 13-16: Hospital-level filtration. Captures fine particles, some bacteria, smoke particles. Very effective but significantly restricts airflow. Not appropriate for all HVAC systems.

MERV 17-20 (HEPA): True HEPA filtration. Not used in residential ductwork - the airflow restriction is too extreme for standard residential blowers.

What MERV 8-11 Captures

A MERV 8-11 filter captures: - Dust and dust mite allergens - Pollen - Mold spores (most sizes) - Pet dander - Most large-particle smoke - Fine dust

It does not effectively capture: - Viruses (too small) - VOCs (volatile organic compounds from paint, cleaning products) - Odors

High-MERV Filters: What to Know Before Upgrading

The most common mistake homeowners make with filters is buying the highest MERV rating available, thinking more filtration is always better.

The problem: High-MERV filters restrict airflow. A MERV 16 filter is dense enough that a residential blower has to work much harder to pull air through it. This can: - Reduce system efficiency - Cause the evaporator coil to freeze (from reduced airflow) - Overstress the blower motor - Increase energy consumption

How to know if your system can handle higher MERV: Ask your HVAC contractor when they're at your home for a tune-up. Or look at the system specifications - minimum airflow requirements are in the installation manual.

A MERV 13 filter in a system designed for MERV 8 can cause the same problems as a clogged filter.

True HEPA vs. "HEPA-Type" Filters

True HEPA captures 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns or larger. This filtration level cannot be integrated into standard residential ductwork without specialized equipment.

"HEPA-type" filters in stores are marketing language. They're usually high-MERV pleated filters - good, but not true HEPA.

If you want true HEPA filtration, consider a standalone HEPA air purifier for specific rooms (bedrooms, living areas). These work separately from the HVAC system and don't affect airflow.

How Often to Change Filters

This determines actual air quality benefit. A MERV 11 filter that's been in place for 4 months is performing more like a MERV 4. Change frequency matters.

Recommended by household type: - No pets, no allergies: Every 90 days - 1-2 pets: Every 60 days - Allergy sufferers: Every 30-45 days - During wildfire season in California: Every 30 days or sooner

Wildfire Season and HVAC Filtration

California wildfires produce PM2.5 (fine particles 2.5 microns and smaller), which is the most harmful air pollutant. MERV 13+ filters help capture some of this. During smoke events:

  • Upgrade to MERV 13 temporarily if your system can handle it (ask your HVAC tech)
  • Run the fan continuously (not just on "Auto") to keep air circulating through the filter
  • Change the filter more frequently during prolonged smoke events
  • Consider a portable HEPA purifier as the primary defense in rooms where you spend the most time

Bottom Line

For most households, a MERV 8-11 pleated filter changed every 1-3 months is the right choice. MERV 13+ requires system verification before use. High-MERV filters without adequate airflow cause HVAC problems that cost more than any air quality benefit they provide. During wildfire season, supplement with a portable HEPA purifier.
