Electrical problems cause approximately 51,000 house fires per year in the US. Most of these start in ways that home owners could have identified and addressed. Here are the electrical checks you should do regularly - no electrician required for most of them.

Monthly Checks

Test GFCI outlets. GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets protect against electrical shock in wet areas. They're required by code in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoor areas - and they need to be tested regularly to verify they work.

How to test: Press the "Test" button. The outlet should lose power (verify with a lamp or tester). Press "Reset" to restore power. If the outlet doesn't trip or won't reset, it needs replacement.

Check extension cords. Look for: - Fraying or cracked insulation - Bent or missing grounding prongs - Signs of heat damage (discoloration near plugs or along the cord) - Cords running under rugs (creates heat buildup and fire risk)

Damaged extension cords should be discarded, not repaired. Extension cords are temporary - not permanent wiring substitutes.

Seasonal or Annual Checks

Inspect visible wiring. In the garage, basement, or any exposed wiring areas: - Look for wiring that's been pinched, stapled through the insulation, or cut - Wires should be properly secured, not hanging loose - Openings in junction boxes should be covered with a cover plate

Check the breaker panel. - Labels should match the actual circuits (test if you're unsure) - No breakers should be in the "tripped" (middle) position without a known reason - No signs of heat, burning smell, or discoloration - Double-tapped breakers (two wires under one screw) should be addressed by an electrician - this is a code violation in most cases

Test smoke and CO detectors. Electrical fires often start unseen inside walls. Functioning smoke detectors are your first line of defense.

Check outdoor outlets and wiring. - Outdoor outlets should have weatherproof covers - Check for water damage, cracking, or animal damage to any visible exterior wiring - Outlets in wet outdoor areas should be GFCI protected

Signs of Electrical Problems to Watch For

Flickering or dimming lights: Occasional flicker when a large appliance starts (refrigerator, AC compressor) is normal. Constant flickering or flickering in multiple rooms unrelated to appliance cycling indicates a loose connection or overloaded circuit.

Breakers that trip repeatedly: A breaker that trips once and doesn't trip again is often a momentary overload. A breaker that trips repeatedly on the same circuit indicates either an overloaded circuit or a fault. Don't just keep resetting it - have an electrician evaluate.

Outlets or switches that are warm to the touch: All electrical components generate some heat under load, but outlets and switches should never be noticeably warm. Warmth indicates an overloaded or loose connection.

Burning or plastic smell: A burning smell from any outlet, switch, or appliance is a serious warning sign. Unplug the appliance or turn off the circuit at the breaker immediately. Investigate before using the circuit again.

Sparking when plugging in appliances: Occasional minor spark when plugging into an outlet is normal (load being applied). Sustained sparking, loud sparks, or sparks every time you plug something in are signs of a problem.

Discolored or blackened outlets and switches: Heat damage from arcing. Replace immediately and investigate the circuit.

Older Home Electrical Hazards

Aluminum wiring (homes built 1965-1973): Some California homes from this era have aluminum branch circuit wiring, which expands and contracts with temperature changes differently than copper and can work loose at connections. Signs: frequent tripping, warm switch plates, flickering lights. Have an electrician inspect and install COPALUM or AlumiConn connectors if you have aluminum wiring.

Knob-and-tube wiring (pre-1950 homes): Some older California homes still have original knob-and-tube wiring. It's not inherently dangerous but lacks a grounding conductor and can't be covered with insulation. If you're insulating or remodeling, have an electrician evaluate and likely upgrade.

Two-prong outlets (no ground): Ungrounded outlets don't protect against shock or equipment damage. They can be upgraded to three-prong GFCI outlets by a licensed electrician (GFCI protection compensates for the lack of a grounding conductor).

When to Call a Licensed Electrician

Always call a licensed C-10 electrician for: - Any circuit that keeps tripping - Any burning smell or heat damage - New circuit installation or panel upgrades - Aluminum wiring remediation - Replacing breakers (working on a live panel is dangerous) - Any work requiring a permit (most circuit-level electrical work in California)

Don't DIY: - Main panel work - Work inside the service entrance (meter socket area) - Anything involving the utility connection

Bottom Line

Regular GFCI testing, breaker panel checks, and watching for warning signs (flickering lights, warm outlets, burning smells) cover the most common electrical safety issues. Many are simple to check yourself. The ones that require action almost always need a licensed electrician.
