If your shower has gone from a strong spray to a weak trickle, the problem is probably not your water pressure - it is mineral buildup inside the shower head. This is one of the easier plumbing fixes homeowners can handle themselves, and it requires almost no tools.

Why Shower Heads Clog

Most California municipalities supply water that contains dissolved minerals - primarily calcium and magnesium. When water flows through a shower head and then sits in the tiny spray nozzles between uses, minerals are left behind as the water evaporates. Over time, this buildup - often called limescale or mineral deposits - can partially or completely block individual spray holes.

Hard water areas of California, including parts of Los Angeles County, the Inland Empire around Riverside, and much of the Sacramento Valley, tend to see this problem more quickly than coastal areas. In some households, spray holes can clog noticeably within six to twelve months.

The symptoms are easy to recognize: uneven spray patterns with some holes blocked, reduced overall flow, or streams that spray at odd angles instead of straight down.

Method 1: Soak Without Removing the Shower Head

This is the easiest approach and works well for moderate buildup.

  1. Fill a sturdy plastic bag with white vinegar - enough to fully submerge the shower head face when the bag is held in place.
  2. Slip the bag up around the shower head so the face is submerged in vinegar.
  3. Secure the bag with a rubber band or zip tie wrapped around the neck of the shower head.
  4. Leave it for at least one to two hours. For heavier buildup, leaving it overnight often works better.
  5. Remove the bag, turn on the water, and run it full blast for a minute or two to flush loosened deposits out.

For light buildup, this is often all you need. The acidity of white vinegar dissolves mineral deposits without damaging most shower head finishes.

Note: Do not use vinegar on brushed gold or specialty-coated finishes for extended periods - the acid can dull certain coatings. Check the manufacturer's care instructions if you have a higher-end fixture.

Method 2: Remove and Deep Clean the Shower Head

For heavier buildup or if the bag method did not fully clear the clog, removing the shower head and soaking it directly works better.

What you will need: - Adjustable wrench or pliers - Plumber's tape (also called Teflon tape) - White vinegar - An old toothbrush or soft brush

Steps: 1. Wrap the connection nut with a cloth or tape before using the wrench - this protects the finish from scratches. 2. Turn the shower head counterclockwise to unscrew it from the arm. 3. Submerge the entire shower head in a container of white vinegar. A large bowl or bucket works well. 4. Soak for two to eight hours, or overnight for severe buildup. 5. Use an old toothbrush to scrub the spray nozzles and remove any remaining deposits. A toothpick can help dislodge debris from individual holes. 6. Rinse thoroughly with water. 7. Before reinstalling, wrap the shower arm threads with fresh plumber's tape (two to three wraps, clockwise). This prevents leaks. 8. Hand-tighten the shower head, then give it a final quarter to half turn with the wrench - do not overtighten. 9. Turn the water on and check for leaks at the connection.

Cleaning the Shower Head Filter Screen

Many shower heads have a small filter screen or washer just inside the inlet where it connects to the arm. This screen traps debris from the supply line and can itself become partially blocked.

When you have the shower head removed, pull out the screen with needle-nose pliers or simply tap the shower head face-down on your palm. Rinse the screen under running water or soak it briefly in vinegar, then reinstall it before putting the shower head back.

When Cleaning Is Not Enough

Sometimes mineral buildup is so severe that cleaning does not fully restore flow - especially in very old shower heads with rubber nozzles that have become permanently deformed. In that case, replacing the shower head is the practical solution. Basic shower heads are widely available for around $20 to $60, and installation is the same process as removal in reverse.

If you clean the shower head thoroughly and flow is still poor, the problem may be elsewhere - a partially closed shutoff valve, a pressure regulator issue, or a broader water pressure problem in the supply line.

How Often to Clean

In hard water areas, cleaning every three to six months is reasonable. A simple preventive habit is to scrub the rubber nozzles with your thumb while the shower is running - this alone can dislodge early-stage mineral deposits before they harden.
