Low water pressure is frustrating. A trickle from the showerhead or a slow-filling washing machine often points to a pressure problem somewhere in the system. Before calling a plumber, you can test your home's water pressure in a few minutes with a simple tool that costs less than fifteen dollars.
What Normal Water Pressure Looks Like
Residential water pressure is measured in pounds per square inch (PSI). Most homes are designed to operate between 40 and 80 PSI. Below 40 PSI, you will likely notice weak flow at showers and faucets. Above 80 PSI, pressure is high enough to stress pipes, fittings, and appliance water inlets - which can shorten their lifespan and cause leaks.
The sweet spot for most homes is somewhere between 50 and 65 PSI.
What You Need
A water pressure gauge with a hose-thread fitting. These are available at hardware stores and online for around $10 to $15. They screw onto any standard outdoor hose bib (the faucet on the outside of your house).
How to Test
- Turn off all faucets and water-using appliances inside the house. Dishwashers, washing machines, and ice makers should all be idle. Running water during the test will give you an artificially low reading.
- Find an outdoor hose bib or a laundry room bib - anywhere there is a threaded faucet connection.
- Screw the pressure gauge onto the fitting by hand. Make it snug but do not over-tighten.
- Open the faucet completely.
- Read the gauge. The needle will settle on a number - that is your static water pressure.
Interpreting the Results
Below 40 PSI: You have low pressure. Common causes include a partially closed main shutoff valve, a failing pressure regulator, a clogged supply line, or simply low pressure from the municipal supply.
40 to 80 PSI: Normal range. If you are experiencing low flow at specific fixtures, the problem is likely local - a clogged aerator, a partially closed shutoff valve under the sink, or a failing fixture rather than a system-wide pressure issue.
Above 80 PSI: Your pressure is too high. This is a common and often overlooked problem. High pressure strains appliance water inlets, accelerates dripping faucets, and increases the risk of pipe and fitting failures. A pressure reducing valve (PRV) can bring it down.
Testing at Different Times of Day
Municipal water pressure fluctuates throughout the day. Pressure is often lower in the morning when demand from neighbors is high, and higher late at night. If you suspect intermittent low pressure, test at a few different times.
Checking the Pressure Reducing Valve
Many homes have a pressure reducing valve (PRV) installed where the main water line enters the house. It looks like a bell-shaped fitting with an adjustment screw. PRVs typically last around fifteen to twenty years and can fail in ways that cause pressure to drop or spike.
If your tested pressure is out of range and a PRV is present, it may need adjustment or replacement. This is something a plumber can handle in an hour or less.
When to Call a Plumber
Test the pressure and then decide:
- If pressure is normal but specific fixtures are weak, clean the aerators and check fixture shutoffs.
- If pressure is low throughout the house, check that the main shutoff valve is fully open. If it is, call a plumber to evaluate the PRV and supply line.
- If pressure is too high, have a plumber install or adjust a PRV. Leaving high pressure unaddressed increases the risk of leaks and appliance damage.
