Smart home devices are increasingly plug-and-play - you buy a smart bulb, screw it in, and connect it to your phone. But some smart home features require actual wiring work, and that is where a licensed electrician comes in. Here is what typically needs professional installation and what you can handle yourself.

What You Can DIY

Most smart home devices are designed for homeowner installation with no electrical work required:

  • Smart bulbs and plug-in smart outlets
  • Smart plugs that insert into existing outlets
  • Smart thermostats (in most cases - more on this below)
  • Smart doorbells with existing doorbell wiring
  • Battery-powered smart locks and sensors
  • Wi-Fi cameras and smart speakers

If a device plugs in or uses existing wiring without modification, it generally does not require a permit or an electrician.

What Requires an Electrician

Smart thermostats with C-wire issues. Most smart thermostats need a C-wire (common wire) to power themselves continuously. Many older homes do not have one. An electrician can run a C-wire to the thermostat location or install an adapter - typically a one to two hour job.

Hardwired smart lighting systems. Systems like Lutron Caseta or similar require replacing standard switches with smart switches. The wiring work itself is simple for a single switch, but in multi-way switch configurations (three-way or four-way switches), the wiring is more complex and easy to get wrong.

Smart panels and circuit monitors. Devices that monitor energy use at the circuit level require installation inside the electrical panel. This is always an electrician job.

Whole-home audio and low-voltage wiring. Running speaker wire, structured media cabling, or ethernet through walls is low-voltage work. Many states allow homeowners to do this without a license, but routing cable through finished walls neatly is a skill that takes practice.

EV chargers. A Level 2 home EV charger requires a dedicated 240-volt circuit. This is a permitted electrical job requiring an electrician.

Motorized shades and smart blinds with hardwired power. Hardwired power for motorized shades requires an electrician to run low-voltage or line-voltage wiring to the window location.

Smart exhaust fans with humidity sensors. Replacing a basic bathroom fan with a smart fan that requires a new wiring configuration is typically an electrician job.

What an Electrician Charges for Smart Home Work

Simple jobs - running a C-wire, replacing a switch - often run $100 to $250 per visit. More involved projects like running dedicated circuits for EV chargers or whole-home wiring for audio systems cost more and require a permit.

Planning a Smart Home Upgrade

If you are building or renovating and want smart home capability built in, the best time to wire for it is during construction when walls are open. Talk to your electrician about conduit runs for future wiring, pre-wiring for whole-house audio, dedicated circuits for high-draw smart devices, and structured wiring for networking.
