If your home was built between the mid-1960s and the late 1970s, it may have aluminum branch circuit wiring. Aluminum wiring poses documented home safety risks, particularly in homes from that era, and understanding those risks is the first step toward managing them. The good news: aluminum wiring is not an automatic emergency, but it does require specific attention.

Why Aluminum Was Used

During the 1960s, copper prices spiked sharply. Aluminum was cheaper and electrically capable of carrying the same load, so builders switched to it for branch circuit wiring - the wiring running through walls to outlets and switches - in many homes built between roughly 1965 and 1973. After that period, problems became well documented and copper use resumed. Aluminum is still used today for large-gauge applications like main service feeds, where it performs reliably. The concern is specifically with smaller-gauge branch wiring.

The Real Home Safety Risks of Aluminum Wiring

The problem is not aluminum conducting electricity - it is what happens at connection points over time.

Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper with temperature changes. Over years of heating and cooling cycles, these small movements cause connections at outlets and switches to loosen. Loose connections create electrical resistance, and resistance creates heat. That heat, at a connection point inside a wall, is a fire hazard.

Aluminum also oxidizes faster than copper when exposed to air. Aluminum oxide is a poor conductor, which increases resistance at connection points further. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has documented higher fire risk in homes with older aluminum branch wiring compared to copper-wired homes.

Warning Signs Your Aluminum Wiring Needs Attention

Do not wait for a problem to become visible. Look for these signs:

  • Outlets or switch covers that feel warm or hot to the touch
  • Flickering lights that are not caused by a loose bulb
  • A burning or plastic-like smell near outlets or switches
  • Outlets that are discolored or show scorch marks around the plate
  • Circuit breakers tripping on circuits that are not heavily loaded

Any of these warrant a call to a licensed electrician before doing anything else.

How to Find Out If Your Home Has Aluminum Wiring

Check the wiring sheathing in the panel box. The metal type is often printed on the plastic jacket - look for AL (aluminum) or CU (copper).

You can also turn off power to an outlet at the breaker, remove the cover plate, and look at the wires. Copper wire is reddish-brown. Aluminum wire is silver-grey.

A licensed home inspector will typically flag aluminum branch wiring during a home inspection.

What To Do About It

Pigtailing. A licensed electrician replaces every outlet and switch with CO/ALR-rated devices or installs short copper extensions (pigtails) at each connection point using approved connectors (COPALUM or AlumiConn). This makes every connection point copper-to-copper while the aluminum remains in the walls. It is the most common and cost-effective remediation.

Full rewiring. Replacing all aluminum branch wiring with copper eliminates the risk entirely but is more expensive and requires opening walls.

What not to do. Simply swapping outlets for standard devices is not enough and can make the connection worse. Use only CO/ALR-rated devices or proper pigtailing connectors.

Cost and Permitting

Pigtailing costs depend on home size and number of circuits. Get at least two quotes from electricians who specifically have experience with aluminum wiring work - not all do. In California, this type of electrical work typically requires a permit. A licensed electrician will handle that.
