HVAC systems are complex, but not everything that goes wrong with them requires a technician. Knowing where the line is saves you money on unnecessary service calls and protects you from doing something that makes the problem worse.
What You Can Do Yourself
Filter Replacement
Difficulty: Very easy Tools: None
Pull out the old filter, note the size printed on the frame, buy the same size at any hardware store, slide the new one in. Do this every 1-3 months.
Thermostat Settings and Battery Replacement
Difficulty: Easy
If the thermostat is blank or unresponsive, replace the batteries first (AA or AAA, usually 2-4 of them). If the display is on but not cooling/heating, verify the mode and fan settings before calling anyone.
Clearing Debris from the Outdoor Unit
Difficulty: Easy Tools: Garden hose
Leaves, grass clippings, and dirt clog the condenser fins. Turn off power to the unit (there's usually a disconnect box near the outdoor unit), then rinse the fins with a garden hose from inside out. Clear vegetation within 18 inches.
Unclogging the Condensate Drain
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
The condensate drain removes moisture from the cooling process. A clogged drain causes water to back up and can trigger a safety shutoff. Locate the drain line (PVC pipe, usually in or near the air handler), find the access point (a T-shaped vent cap), and flush with a mixture of water and a small amount of bleach or white vinegar.
Resetting a Tripped Breaker
Difficulty: Easy
If the AC stops working, check the electrical panel. The HVAC circuit may have tripped. Reset it once. If it trips again immediately, stop - there's an electrical problem that needs a tech.
Thawing a Frozen Evaporator Coil
Difficulty: Easy
Turn off the AC but leave the fan running ("Fan On" at the thermostat). This blows room-temperature air over the coil and thaws it. Then identify why it froze (clogged filter, blocked vents) and fix that before restarting cooling.
What Requires a Technician
Any Refrigerant Work
Refrigerant handling requires EPA 608 certification. It's a federal requirement, not a guideline. Beyond legality, incorrect refrigerant handling can destroy a compressor. If you suspect low refrigerant (insufficient cooling, ice on lines, hissing sound), call a tech.
Electrical Component Replacement
Capacitors, contactors, relays, and control boards involve live electrical components in a system that can hold charge even after being turned off. Capacitors in particular can hold a dangerous charge. These are repairs for experienced technicians.
Heat Exchanger Inspection
A cracked heat exchanger can allow combustion gases including carbon monoxide to mix with your home's air. This is a safety issue requiring professional inspection and repair. Do not attempt to inspect or patch a heat exchanger yourself.
Compressor Issues
The compressor is the most expensive component in your system. Diagnosing compressor issues requires specific gauges and training. Misdiagnosing and attempting repairs on a compressor wastes money and can cause additional damage.
Duct Sealing (Major Work)
Minor duct sealing with mastic or foil tape in accessible areas is DIY territory. But ductwork that needs significant repair (collapsed sections, major leaks in attic or walls) is worth professional attention.
Gas Line Work
Gas connections for furnaces are a licensed plumber's job in California. Don't touch gas connections.
The Gray Zone: Call or Not?
System not turning on: Start with thermostat batteries, breaker check, and furnace power switch. If those are fine, call a tech.
Unusual noise: Depends on the sound (see the AC noise guide). Rattling from debris - DIY. Banging, screaming, repeated clicking - call a tech.
High energy bill: Check filter and vents first. If those are fine and the bill is significantly higher than usual, schedule a maintenance check.
Ice on the unit: Thaw it with the fan-only method, then check filter and vents. If it refreezes, call a tech (refrigerant leak or airflow problem).
Bottom Line
Change your own filters, clear debris from the outdoor unit, reset breakers, and thaw frozen coils. Everything involving refrigerant, live electrical components, gas connections, or heat exchangers goes to a licensed HVAC technician.
