Where to Find Error Codes
On the furnace or air handler: Most modern units have an LED display or indicator light on the control board. Open the front panel (turn off the system first) and look for a blinking light pattern or digital readout.

Step 3: Determine if the cause is something you can check: - High limit fault → check your filter and vents - Pressure switch fault → check the condensate drain line (often clogged) - Communication error on mini-split → power cycle the unit
Step 4: If the code returns after resetting, call a technician. Give them the exact error code - this speeds up diagnosis and often means they bring the right parts on the first visit.
Error Codes That Need Immediate Attention
Any code related to the heat exchanger → potential CO risk, shut system off and ventilate
Lockout codes after multiple ignition failures → gas or ignition system issue, don't keep resetting without investigating
Pressure-related codes in an AC → may indicate refrigerant issue, don't run the system in this state
What Not to Do
Don't keep resetting and ignoring. Some homeowners reset a fault code and hope the problem goes away. It usually doesn't - and repeated lockout cycles can shorten equipment life.
Don't assume the code tells you the part to replace. A "pressure switch fault" means the pressure switch opened, but the cause could be the switch itself, a blocked drain, a blocked flue, or an inducer motor issue. The code points toward the system; it doesn't diagnose the specific part.
