Arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs) are a type of circuit breaker designed to detect dangerous electrical arcing - sparks inside wiring or connections that can start fires even without tripping a standard breaker. If your AFCI breaker keeps tripping, here is what that means and how to troubleshoot it.

What Makes Arc Fault Breakers Different

Standard breakers protect against overloads and short circuits - conditions that draw far more current than a circuit is rated for. AFCIs protect against a different hazard: arcing caused by damaged wiring, loose connections, or a cord that is pinched under furniture or in a door.

Electrical arcing does not always draw enough current to trip a standard breaker, but it generates heat that can ignite insulation or framing inside the walls. AFCIs detect the specific signature of arc faults and trip before damage occurs.

The NEC has required AFCI protection in bedrooms since 1999, and the requirement has expanded over successive code cycles. Many newer homes have AFCI protection in most living spaces.

Why AFCI Breakers Trip

Actual arc fault. The most important cause: there is genuine arcing in the wiring or a connected device. A damaged extension cord, a cord pinched by furniture, a loose connection in an outlet or fixture, or deteriorating wiring inside the wall can all cause real arc faults.

Nuisance tripping from appliances. Some electrical devices produce signals that AFCI breakers interpret as arcing even when no hazard exists. Older vacuum cleaners, some power tools, and certain treadmill motors are common culprits. Dimmer switches that are not rated for the fixtures they control can also cause nuisance trips.

Loose connections in the circuit. A loose wire at any outlet, switch, or fixture on the circuit can cause intermittent arcing. The breaker is doing its job - the loose connection is the underlying problem.

The breaker itself is faulty. AFCI breakers are more complex than standard breakers and can fail. If the circuit has no other identifiable cause for tripping, the breaker itself may need replacement.

How to Troubleshoot

Step 1: Reset and observe. After a trip, reset the breaker and see if it trips again immediately or only under specific conditions.

Step 2: Unplug everything on the circuit. Reset the breaker with all devices unplugged and lights off. If it holds, start plugging devices back in one at a time. If it trips when you plug in a specific device, that device is causing the trip.

Step 3: Inspect outlets and switches. With power off, remove outlet cover plates and look for loose wire connections. A loose wire at a connection point is a common cause.

Step 4: Check extension cords. Damaged or overloaded extension cords are a leading cause of arc fault trips. Replace any cord that is frayed, pinched, or has been run under a rug.

When to Call an Electrician

Call an electrician if the breaker trips with nothing plugged in, if you find any outlet or switch with signs of scorch marks or burning smell, or if the trip pattern is random and you cannot isolate the cause. An electrician can use specialized tools to trace intermittent arc faults that are not visible through standard inspection.
