A tripped circuit breaker is one of those problems that sounds scary but is usually a straightforward fix. This guide walks you through resetting one safely, explains why breakers trip in the first place, and helps you figure out when the problem goes deeper than a simple reset.
What a Circuit Breaker Actually Does
Your electrical panel is a row of switches - each one controlling a circuit in your home. When too much electricity flows through a circuit (because of an overload, a short, or a fault), the breaker detects it and cuts power before your wiring overheats. That tripped breaker may be inconvenient, but it is doing exactly what it was designed to do.
Older homes sometimes used fuses instead of breakers. If you have a fuse box, the reset process is different - a blown fuse needs to be replaced, not reset.
How to Tell If a Breaker Has Tripped
Look at your electrical panel. A tripped breaker usually sits in the middle position between "ON" and "OFF" - it will not be fully in either direction. Some panels have a visible red or orange indicator when a breaker trips. Others require you to look carefully at the switch positions.
If all breakers look like they are fully on, the issue could be somewhere else - a GFCI outlet that has tripped, for example, or a loose connection.
Step-by-Step: Resetting a Tripped Breaker
- Identify what lost power. Note which lights or outlets stopped working. This points you to the right circuit.
- Unplug appliances on that circuit. Before resetting, reduce the load. If a hair dryer, space heater, or microwave triggered the trip, unplug it first.
- Find the tripped breaker. Open your panel cover - it should be on a hinged door. Look for the switch in the middle position.
- Push it all the way to OFF first. This is important. Most breakers need to be fully switched off before you can reset them.
- Switch it firmly to ON. You should feel a slight click. If it holds, power is restored. If it immediately trips again, stop and read the next section.
- Test the circuit. Plug in a lamp or check that lights come back on.
The whole process typically takes under five minutes if the cause was a simple overload.
Why Breakers Trip
There are three main reasons:
Overloaded circuit. This is the most common cause. Too many appliances drawing power from the same circuit. A single 15-amp circuit can handle around 1,800 watts - a space heater alone can pull 1,500 watts. Add a hair dryer and you exceed the limit.
Short circuit. A short happens when a hot wire touches a neutral wire, usually inside a device, outlet, or junction box. Shorts cause an immediate and often loud trip. You may smell something burning. The breaker will trip again the moment you reset it.
Ground fault. Similar to a short, but the hot wire touches a ground wire or a grounded surface. GFCI outlets protect against ground faults in wet areas. If the breaker in your panel is tripping rather than a GFCI outlet, the fault is usually deeper in the wiring.
Arc fault. If you have AFCI (arc fault circuit interrupter) breakers - which are now required by code in most areas of new construction - they trip on detected arcing. Loose connections, damaged cords, and aging wiring can all cause arc faults.
When It Keeps Tripping - What That Means
If a breaker trips right after you reset it, or trips again within minutes, do not keep resetting it. Repeated resets can cause heat damage to the breaker and the wiring.
Here is what repeated tripping usually signals:
- A failing breaker. Breakers wear out over time. A breaker that trips under normal loads it used to handle may simply be worn. Replacement is inexpensive - typically around $10 to $50 for a standard breaker - but the work requires shutting off the main and working inside a live panel, which is a job for a licensed electrician.
- A wiring problem. Loose connections, damaged insulation, or undersized wiring for the loads on that circuit.
- A failing appliance. If the breaker only trips when one specific appliance is plugged in, that appliance has an internal fault and should be repaired or replaced before it causes a fire.
- An overloaded circuit that needs to be split. In older homes, too many outlets and lights often run on one circuit. Adding a dedicated circuit is the proper fix.
When to Call an Electrician
Most homeowners can safely reset a breaker once. But call a licensed electrician if:
- The breaker trips again after you reset it
- You smell burning near the panel or any outlet
- The panel feels warm to the touch
- You see scorch marks or discoloration inside the panel
- You hear buzzing or crackling from the panel
- The breaker is for a high-voltage circuit (240V for dryers, EV chargers, HVAC equipment)
In California, licensed electricians typically charge around $80 to $150 per hour for diagnostic work, and a service call often starts at $100 to $200. Diagnosing and fixing a wiring fault in a single circuit usually runs somewhere in the range of $150 to $400 depending on what is found.
Safety Notes for Homeowners
- Never work inside the main panel with the main breaker on. Even with individual breakers off, the wires feeding into the main breaker remain live.
- Do not use tape, pennies, or any bypass to keep a tripped breaker on. That eliminates the protection entirely.
- If your panel feels warm or smells like fish or burning plastic, that is an emergency - call an electrician and consider calling the fire department if the smell is strong.
What Happens During a Panel Inspection
If repeated tripping sends you down the path of hiring an electrician, they will typically start by measuring amperage on the affected circuit, check connections at the panel and at each outlet and switch on that circuit, and look for signs of overheating or damage. A good electrician will tell you whether the fix is a simple breaker replacement, a wiring repair, or a new dedicated circuit.
If your panel is older - particularly a Zinsco, Federal Pacific, or early-generation pushmatic panel - the electrician may flag that as a separate safety concern worth addressing.
A tripped breaker is your home's electrical system doing its job. Respect what it is telling you, fix the root cause, and you will stay safe.
