Most homeowners never think about their pipes until something goes wrong. But pipes have a finite lifespan, and when they start to fail, the problems compound quickly. Knowing what your pipes are made of and how old they are is the first step toward deciding whether proactive replacement makes sense.

Pipe Materials and Their Expected Lifespan

Different pipe materials age at very different rates.

Copper: The most durable and widely used material in homes built from the 1960s onward. Copper supply lines typically last 50 years or more under normal conditions. Drain lines made of copper also hold up well, though they are less common.

Galvanized steel: Common in homes built before the 1960s. Galvanized pipe is steel coated with zinc to resist corrosion. The zinc layer wears away over decades, and once it does, the steel rusts from the inside out. Galvanized pipes are often at or past the end of their useful life in older homes - typically rated for around 40 to 70 years, but real-world performance varies widely.

PVC and CPVC: Plastic pipe used for drain lines (PVC) and some supply lines (CPVC). Generally very durable when installed correctly - 25 to 40 years or more for supply, longer for drains. Prone to cracking if exposed to UV or extreme cold.

PEX: A flexible plastic tubing that has become the standard for supply lines in new construction. Expected lifespan is generally 25 to 50 years, though long-term data is still accumulating since widespread use only began in the 1990s.

Lead: Still found in some homes built before the 1950s. Lead pipes should be replaced regardless of their condition - there is no safe level of lead exposure from drinking water.

Polybutylene: A grey plastic pipe used in homes built from the 1970s through the mid-1990s. It has a history of premature failure and was removed from the market. If your home has polybutylene, replacement is recommended.

Signs Your Pipes May Need Replacement

Discolored water. Brown, orange, or rust-tinted water from cold taps is often a sign of corroding galvanized or cast iron pipes. If multiple faucets show discoloration, the issue is likely in the main supply lines.

Frequent leaks. A single pipe leak can be a local failure. Two or three leaks in different areas of the house within a short period suggests the pipe material itself is degrading.

Reduced water pressure. As galvanized pipes corrode internally, scale builds up and reduces the effective diameter of the pipe. Pressure and flow drop noticeably.

Visible corrosion. Check exposed pipes in the basement, crawl space, or under sinks. Flaking, pitting, dimpling, or blue-green staining on copper are signs of active corrosion.

Recurring clogs. Corroded drain pipes can develop rough interior surfaces that catch debris and cause repeated clogs.

Your home is over 50 years old and has not been repiped. If you do not know the pipe material and the home is old, it is worth having a plumber inspect the visible sections and give an assessment.

What a Repipe Involves

Repiping means replacing the main supply lines throughout the house. It is a significant project - typically taking two to five days depending on house size - but it is less disruptive than it sounds. Modern repiping often uses PEX tubing, which can be routed through walls with minimal drywall cutting.

The water is shut off during the work, usually with same-day water restoration once new lines are installed. Drywall patching and painting are typically handled separately after the plumbing work.

What Repiping Costs

Whole-house repipe cost varies significantly based on house size, number of fixtures, pipe material chosen, and your location. Expect a wide range depending on regional labor costs - California and other high-cost states tend to be at the higher end. Get at least two or three quotes before committing.
