A sump pump sits quietly in the corner of your basement or crawl space until the moment you need it most - during a heavy rainstorm or rapid snowmelt. If it fails then, you find out too late. Regular maintenance takes about thirty minutes a year and is the most reliable way to avoid a flooded basement.
What a Sump Pump Does
The pump sits in a pit (the sump) at the lowest point of your basement. When water collects in the pit and reaches a certain level, a float switch triggers the pump to push the water out through a discharge pipe that leads away from the foundation.
Most residential sump pumps are submersible units that sit inside the pit. Pedestal pumps have the motor mounted above the pit on a column - these are less common in newer homes but still found in older ones.
Annual Maintenance Steps
Test the pump. Pour a bucket of water slowly into the sump pit. The float should rise and trigger the pump to turn on. The water should drain quickly - within a minute or two - and the pump should shut off automatically once the pit empties. If the pump does not turn on or drains slowly, it needs attention.
Check the float switch. The float is a small ball or arm that rises with the water level. Make sure it moves freely and is not stuck against the side of the pit or tangled with the power cord. A stuck float means the pump will not activate.
Inspect the discharge pipe. Trace the pipe that carries water away from the pump. Check that the outdoor end is clear of debris, ice (in winter), and that the pipe is directing water well away from your foundation - typically at least six to ten feet.
Clean the inlet screen. Most submersible pumps have an intake screen at the bottom. Remove the pump from the pit, rinse off any mud or debris with a garden hose, and check that the screen openings are clear.
Check for unusual noise. Run the pump briefly and listen. A grinding or rattling sound often indicates a damaged impeller. A pump that hums but does not move water may have a failed motor or clogged impeller.
Inspect the check valve. The check valve is a one-way valve on the discharge line that prevents water from flowing back into the pit when the pump shuts off. A failed check valve causes the pump to cycle on and off repeatedly (called short cycling). Listen for the pump turning on more frequently than expected.
Battery Backup Systems
Standard sump pumps run on electricity. During a storm - exactly when you need the pump most - power outages are common. A battery backup system provides protection when the main power fails. If your pump does not have a backup, it is worth considering especially if your basement contains finished living space, stored valuables, or mechanicals.
Battery backup units typically need their batteries replaced every three to five years. Check the charge indicator annually.
When to Replace a Sump Pump
Most submersible sump pumps last around seven to ten years with normal use. Signs that replacement may be overdue:
- The pump runs continuously or cycles on and off frequently
- Visible rust on the casing or motor housing
- The pump is seven or more years old and has never been serviced
- The pit floods despite the pump running (motor has lost power)
Replacing a sump pump is something many homeowners handle themselves - the connections are typically straightforward. For pumps plumbed with rigid pipe or in tight spaces, a plumber can complete the swap in a couple of hours.
Seasonal Tips
Before the rainy season or spring snowmelt, run a full test and confirm the discharge pipe is clear. In areas with cold winters, check that the end of the discharge pipe has not been blocked by ice or frozen soil.
