Most homeowners do not think about their electrical panel until something goes wrong. But an outdated or undersized panel can quietly create fire hazards, limit your ability to add new appliances, and cause constant nuisance tripping. Knowing what to look for can save you from a more serious problem later.
How Long Electrical Panels Typically Last
A standard electrical panel is generally designed to last around 25 to 40 years under normal conditions. That said, age alone does not determine whether a panel needs replacement. What matters more is whether the panel can safely handle your current and future electrical loads.
Many homes in California - particularly those built in the 1960s through 1980s - still have panels rated for 100 amps or less. Modern homes with multiple large appliances, EV chargers, and air conditioning systems often require 200-amp service or more.
Warning Signs That Point to a Panel Problem
Frequent tripping. If breakers trip regularly under normal loads - a hair dryer, microwave, and coffee maker running in the morning - your panel may be undersized for your usage. Occasional tripping is normal. Tripping several times a week on the same circuits points to a capacity or wiring issue.
Breakers that will not hold. If you reset a breaker and it trips again immediately, or if the handle feels loose and does not fully engage, the breaker itself may be failing. Breakers do wear out, and a panel full of old, marginal breakers is worth having inspected.
Lights that dim when appliances turn on. A washing machine, air conditioner, or refrigerator drawing power when it starts up causes a brief voltage drop. If your lights visibly dim when these appliances kick on, that is often a sign the panel - or the service entering the house - is being pushed near its limits.
Warm or hot panel cover. Touch the outside of your panel door. It should be at or near room temperature. A warm panel can indicate overloaded circuits or a failing component. A hot panel is an urgent sign to call an electrician.
Burning smell or scorch marks. Any smell of burning plastic, a sulfur or fishy odor near the panel, or visible discoloration inside the panel box is a serious warning. This is not a "watch and wait" situation.
You rely on extension cords as a permanent solution. This is a lifestyle indicator rather than a panel symptom, but if your rooms consistently have too few outlets, you likely have an outdated panel without enough circuits for your needs.
You are planning a major addition or upgrade. Adding an EV charger, a hot tub, central air conditioning, or a home addition typically triggers an electrical permit and inspection - and the inspector will flag an undersized or unsafe panel.
Panels With Known Safety Issues
Certain panel brands manufactured during the mid-20th century have documented safety problems and are generally considered unacceptable by modern standards. If your home has one of these, most electricians and home insurers will recommend replacement:
Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab-Lok panels. These were extremely common in the 1950s through 1980s and have a well-documented history of failing to trip when they should. An estimated one to two million of these panels may still be in use across the US. Many insurance companies refuse to cover homes with these panels or charge significantly higher premiums.
Zinsco panels. Also called GTE-Sylvania in some regions. These have a documented history of breakers melting and fusing to the bus bar, which means they cannot trip at all. This is a serious fire hazard.
Early pushmatic panels. These were made by Bulldog Electric. They use push-button breakers rather than switches. They have fewer documented failure modes than FPE or Zinsco panels, but replacement parts are difficult to find and aging units are increasingly unreliable.
If you are buying a home, a home inspector should identify these panel types. If you already own a home with one of these panels and did not know, it is worth having an electrician take a look.
The 100-Amp vs. 200-Amp Question
Homes built before roughly 1970 were often wired with 60-amp or 100-amp service. At the time, that was sufficient. Today, a 100-amp panel can support a modest older home with gas appliances, but it often runs short if you add:
- Central air conditioning (typically 15 to 50 amps depending on the system)
- An electric vehicle charger (typically 30 to 50 amps for a Level 2 charger)
- An electric water heater or dryer (typically 30 amps)
- A home office with significant computer and peripheral loads
Upgrading from 100-amp to 200-amp service requires coordination with your utility company to upgrade the service drop, plus a permit and inspection in most California jurisdictions. This is not a DIY project.
What a Panel Upgrade Typically Costs
In the Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento, and Riverside areas, a full electrical panel replacement typically runs somewhere in the range of $1,500 to $4,000 for a standard 200-amp upgrade, including labor, permits, and inspection fees. That range can go higher if the service entry also needs to be upgraded, if the meter base needs replacing, or if wiring inside the house needs remediation.
Some utilities offer rebates for service upgrades done in conjunction with EV charger installation or electrification projects. It is worth checking with your local utility before starting the work.
How an Electrician Assesses Your Panel
A licensed electrician doing a panel assessment will typically:
- Note the panel brand, age, and amperage rating
- Check for breakers that look scorched, feel warm, or have visible damage
- Look for double-tapped breakers (two wires on one breaker terminal, which is against code in most configurations)
- Check that the panel is properly grounded and bonded
- Review whether the number of circuits matches the current layout of the home
- Test a sample of breakers for proper operation
Based on what they find, the electrician will give you a range of recommendations from simple fixes (replace a failing breaker, add a circuit) to full panel replacement.
Your electrical panel is one of the few components of your home where deferred maintenance can directly cause a fire. If you have any of the warning signs above - or simply have not had the panel looked at in the past 20 years - a professional inspection is a reasonable investment.
