California summers are hot. In the Inland Empire, Central Valley, and San Fernando Valley, temperatures routinely exceed 100F for weeks at a time. Preparing your home for summer heat reduces your energy bills, keeps your AC system from failing at the worst moment, and makes the house more comfortable through peak season.

HVAC Preparation (Most Important)

Schedule your AC tune-up in April or May. By June, HVAC companies are flooded with emergency calls from people whose AC failed. Scheduling a tune-up before peak season means: - You get a preferred appointment time - Any failing components (capacitor, refrigerant leak) are fixed before they cause a breakdown during a heat wave - The system is running efficiently going into the hot months

What a tune-up should include: refrigerant check, coil cleaning, capacitor and electrical inspection, thermostat calibration, filter replacement.

Replace the air filter. If the filter hasn't been changed since last year, replace it before running the AC heavily. A clogged filter reduces efficiency and can freeze the evaporator coil.

Clear around the outdoor unit. Remove any vegetation, debris, or objects within 18 inches of the condenser. Good airflow around the outdoor unit is critical for efficient operation.

Test the system before you need it. Turn the AC on in April and verify cold air comes out. Discovering a problem in April gives you weeks to schedule a repair. Discovering it in July during a heat wave means a long wait and emergency pricing.

Home Cooling Upgrades

Install or check attic ventilation. Heat builds in the attic and conducts down into living spaces. Ridge vents, soffit vents, and attic fans all help. Attic temperatures in poorly ventilated attics can reach 140-160F in California summers, significantly increasing the cooling load.

Add or improve attic insulation. California's recommended R-value for attic insulation is R-38 to R-60. Under-insulated attics transfer heat directly into living spaces, making the AC work much harder. Professional blown-in insulation costs $1,200-$2,500 and reduces cooling costs 15-25%.

Window film or treatments. Solar-control window film reduces heat gain through windows by 30-50%. South and west-facing windows are the biggest contributors. Film installation costs $300-$700 for a typical home, or you can buy DIY film for $30-$80/window.

Ceiling fans. Running ceiling fans (counterclockwise in summer) makes a room feel 4-7 degrees cooler, allowing you to set the thermostat higher without discomfort. Install ceiling fans in bedrooms and main living areas if you don't have them.

Reducing Heat Gain During the Day

The goal is to minimize how much heat enters the home during peak sun hours (10am-4pm):

Close window coverings on south and west-facing windows. Cellular shades, blackout curtains, or exterior shades dramatically reduce solar heat gain. An unshaded south-facing window can add 50-100+ BTUs per square foot per hour in direct sun.

Use heavy curtains or thermal shades. Cellular honeycomb shades are the most effective DIY option for heat reduction - they create an insulating air barrier and can reduce heat gain significantly.

Cook during cooler hours. Oven use in the afternoon adds significant heat to the home. Grill outside, use a microwave or slow cooker, or cook early morning or evening during heat waves.

Minimize heat-producing appliances mid-day. Dishwasher, clothes dryer, and electric appliances all produce heat. Run them in the morning or evening.

Emergency Heat Preparedness

Even with good preparation, heat waves can overwhelm home cooling. Have a plan:

Know your nearest cooling center. Most California cities open cooling centers (libraries, community centers, senior centers) during heat emergencies. These are free and open to anyone.

Have a portable AC as backup. A portable or window AC unit ($200-$500) can cool one room if the central system fails during a heat wave. Keep one or know where to get one quickly.

Identify vulnerable household members. Elderly family members, young children, and people with certain medical conditions are at higher risk for heat illness. Have a specific plan for them if home cooling fails.
