What Each System Does
Central AC + gas furnace (split system): The traditional setup. A gas furnace heats the home in winter; a separate AC unit cools it in summer. Two systems, two fuel sources (electricity + gas), two sets of maintenance.
Heat pump: One system that both heats and cools. In summer, it works like a regular AC. In winter, it reverses and extracts heat from outdoor air to heat the home. One system, one fuel source (electricity).

Federal tax credit: The IRS states that the federal 25C home-improvement credit is not allowed for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Do not include the former heat-pump credit in a 2026 estimate.
Utility rebates: SCE, PG&E, and other utilities offer heat pump rebates of $500-$3,000 depending on the model and program. These programs change - check your utility's website for current amounts.
California Energy Commission programs: Additional state-level incentives are available for low-to-moderate income households (TECH Clean California, HEAR programs).
Active utility and state rebates may reduce the installed cost, but program amounts and eligible equipment change. Verify the exact model and installation date with the program administrator before comparing net prices.
Which Is Right for You?
Choose a heat pump if: - You're replacing both your AC and furnace at the same time (best value scenario) - Your home is in a mild California climate zone (most of coastal and Southern CA) - You want to reduce gas usage or your home is being upgraded to all-electric - You want to take advantage of available rebates
Keep a traditional system if: - Your existing AC is new and only the furnace needs replacement - You're in a high-elevation California area with frequent freezing temperatures - Your electrical service is limited (heat pumps draw more amperage than gas furnaces; some older homes need a panel upgrade)

For many California homeowners replacing a full HVAC system, a heat pump deserves a serious look. Compare local winter design temperatures, electricity and gas rates, equipment performance, and currently active utility rebates. Do not assume an expired federal credit or universal operating-cost advantage.
